National League roundup 22-24 November

The 2024 National League has concluded for the Wellington Phoenix reserves, with both men’s and women’s teams playing their final fixtures over the weekend.

The men’s side travelled to Auckland to take on Western Springs, who needed a big win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the grand final alive.

Despite being goalless at halftime, a second half blitz saw the home side come away with a 5-0 victory, although they fell just short of qualifying for the final.

The result means that the Nix finish the season in fifth place, an excellent achievement for the youngest squad in the league.

The highlight of the campaign was undoubtedly the back to back victories over pre-competition favourites Auckland City and Wellington Olympic.

Also in Auckland, the women’s side faced Auckland United, who had already secured top spot and a place in the grand final.

Auckland triumphed 3-0, all three goals coming in a twenty minute period in the second half.

The women’s reserves end the National League in ninth with four points.

Although the side found it difficult to cope with a number of international call ups and first team involvements, they were much improved towards the back end of the season and competed strongly with some of the leading domestic sides in the country.
