National League Round Up – Oct 19-20

Heavy home defeats for the Wellington Phoenix men’s and women’s reserves in round four of the National League Championship.

The Phoenix men’s reserves hosted Coastal Spirit in the opening match of the weekend at Fraser Park, looking to extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

Reserves head coach Chris Greenacre was able to call on first team squad members Dublin Boon, Luke Supyk and Luke Brooke-Smith.

After a tightly-fought start to the match Alejandro Steinwascher put Coastal Spirit in front in the 27th minute and he doubled their advantage shortly before halftime.

Steinwascher completed his hat-trick early in the second half and the visitors professionally closed out the match to secure a 3-0 win.

The Phoenix women’s reserves hosted Eastern Suburbs 24 hours later, with both sides looking for their first wins of the season.

The Lily Whites opened the scoring in the 15th minute and doubled their lead inside half an hour.

Britney Cunningham-Lee then scored a second half hat-trick to secure a 5-0 victory for Eastern Suburbs.

The Wellington Phoenix had mixed results in the National Youth League.

The Phoenix under-17 boys played Miramar Rangers at Wakefield Park on Saturday afternoon for first place in the central region.

Miramar led 3-2 at halftime but the young Nix fought back to level the scores to 4-4 and force the game to a penalty shoot-out, in which Miramar ultimately won 5-4.

The Phoenix under-17 girls hosted Eastern Suburbs at Fraser Park on Sunday afternoon for top spot in the National Youth League.

The Nix prevailed 1-0 thanks to a 12th minute goal from Ava Hipkins to now have a perfect four from four record.

They now sit a point clear of Fencibles United at the top of the table, with Eastern Suburbs third, with their rivals having played two extra matches.
